Each year growers encounter problems in controlling soil pH. Researchers have divided plants into three categories, depending upon their performance in soilless media at different pH ranges. Most media manufacturers provide a standard mix pH between 5.5 and 6.5, which is satisfactory for most crops. However, some crops prefer a more acidic mix ranging from 5.0 to 6.0, while others prefer a more basic mix of 5.8 to 6.8. Fafard provides custom mixes to satisfy these crops by adjusting the amount of dolomitic limestone incorporated into the mix.

Understanding Limestone

Growing mixes almost always contain limestone as an ingredient. The limestone is used to adjust the pH of the mix. In the mix formula, the limestone addition rate is listed as the number of pounds of limestone added per cubic yard of mix. However, the term limestone is at best a generic name for material that, to be fully understood, requires a more detailed definition.

Recently I had a long phone conversation with a grower that had used Fafard bark mixes for years. But this past summer, he made the decision to buy a mixing line and make the mix himself to save some money. At the present time, he needs about 600 cubic yards of mix per year, but his business is growing. He had a lot of questions and was a little nervous about his new challenge.
